One of the main things I learned that might seem obvious was the importance of having some sort of digital identity and, along with that, a portfolio that showcases your various works. As someone who strives to have as low of a digital presence as possible, this one was a tough pill to swallow but I know it’s an important lesson to take in due to the fact that it shows marketability and makes you likelier to be hired if potential employers can see your previous works and the skills you’ve acquired from them. Another thing I took away from these sites was the idea of a cyberinfrastructure, which I took to mean learning and amassing a variety of technological tools that will help you as you build up your digital portfolio. The last thing I took away from these websites was the fact that you should be holding yourself professionally online controlling your online identity if you’re gonna be using your real name and face. At the every least you should be making sure that the things you’re posting online are things you wouldn’t mind being seen by potential employers as well as friends and family members. It’s also important to make connections and do some networking as you continue to build your digital portfolio, that way you get to know a wide variety of people and can use them as resources in the future.
